Description
A teenage girl competes in an evening saddle seat equitation championship class. Why didn't I just say 'this kid is riding in a horse show'? Because the complete description explains her attire.
How do I know it's a saddle seat class? Because of the rider's position - very straight back and elevated hands (also because of the saddle and bridle).
How do I know that it is an evening championship class? Because evening classes are more formal than daytime classes, and a championship class is a 'black tie affair'; a black tuxedo suit with a formal white shirt is the norm. Back in the day, a rider was only permitted to wear white gloves when he or she was given them by the trainer. White gloves make your hands very visible, so if you were unable to keep them (what appears to be) absolutely still, you wore dark gloves.
The ASPCA Good Hands Class debuted in 1929 at the National Horse Show in Madison Square Garden, New York City. It remains the culmination of years of dedication to the most discreet subtleties in riding, a year of successful competition, as riders qualify to compete. The Good Hands is an equitation class, judged on the rider's form and precision as he or she shows the horse in a group and then performing an individual pattern at the judge's request.
The majority of competitors in equitation classes - in both saddle seat and hunt seat disciplines - are female. But a few outstanding men have competed successfully in both disciplines, winning top honors in both. The most recognizable name is William Steinkraus, who won gold in individual jumping at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, won both the Good Hands and the Maclay (a top hunt seat equitation class) at Madison Square Garden in 1941. Today, such a feat would be unheard of.
