Description
This Andalusian gelding is playing in his pasture, practicing his levade. Levade is one of the 'airs above the ground' demonstrated by the Lipizzaners of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. This movement, as well as capriole and courbette, were originally refined as defensive movements in battle.
Even though these movements are performed most often by Lipizanners, all horses are capable of showing their exuberance in antics that include the high school (haute ecole) moves. The difference is that the highly trained haute ecole horses perform them on command and with great strength and precision.
The Andalusian, also known as PRE (Pura Raza Espaniola) is an Iberian breed similar to the Lusitano.
This lovely gelding (a castrated male horse) was playing in his pasture in the Schoharie Valley of New York State.

Thank you, Lynn. I just reread my description and obviously wasn't clear in it. This gelding is an Andalusian. I'm editing that right now! And I greatly appreciate the l/f!

Thank you, Annette and Jenny. I apologize for the delay in seeing your comments - I was on vacation for two weeks, and sort of slowly getting back on track. I appreciate your compliments.

Day late, and dollar short - but thank you, Cheryl, for featuring Practicing Levade in The Equine Artist group!
