Description
Almost a decade ago, Brian Fairchild, owner of Jiminy Peak Ski Resort in MA, put up a windmill to make his resort more energy efficient and his energy costs more affordable. He started something.
The Berkshire Wind Power Cooperative is a unique public power initiative that owns and operates a 10-turbine, 15-megawatt wind farm along the ridge of Brodie Mountain, west of Williamstown, MA (and just east of Jiminy Peak).
This non-profit entity consists of 14 Massachusetts municipal utilities and their joint action agency, the Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company. Berkshire Wind started operation in May 2008.
The Berkshire Wind Power Project is the second largest operating wind farm in Massachusetts. Wind speeds average over 18 mph along the ridge, capable of producing enough electricity to power 6,000 homes while offsetting the production of nearly 612,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide and the use of 1.7 million barrels of oil.
