Description
Shasta Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam across the Sacramento River near Redding in Northern California. The eighth-tallest dam in the United States, Shasta Dam creates Shasta Lake, the largest reservoir in California, which can hold about 4,500,000 acre feet.
Shasta Dam provides flood control and carryover water storage for the dry season; contributes greatly to irrigation in the Sacramento Valley and navigation on the Sacramento River; and generates hydroelectricity.
In 2015 due to the ongoing drought, Shasta Lake was at only 30 percent capacity; feeder streams and inlets were completely dry; deer grazed on what was normally lake floor; and there was more ‘bathtub ring” than water, even in the main basin of the lake. Fortunately, as of May 2016, El Nino has provided some relief and water levels are up considerably for the moment.
Underneath the waters of Shasta Lake lie buried the traditional lands of the Winnemem Wintu tribe. Never heard of them? That’s because they’re considered to be a ghost tribe - not federally recognized. Over 27 sacred sites lie underneath the water behind the dam. Environmental groups are supporting the Winnemem Wintu, who are against further expansion of the dam.
