Description
The Land of Medicine Buddha in Aptos/Santa Cruz, CA is the most serene place on earth. Hiking trails wind through redwood forest, interrupted only by flowers, birds, and the occasional gong of a prayer bell or the sound of chanting.
This Medicine Buddha statue shows the blue skin, usually depicted in paintings. The right hand is held facing downward with fingers extended toward the ground, palm facing outward toward the viewer, and a bowl of herbs rests in the left hand upon the lap.
If you know what to look for, you can tell the meaning of a Buddha Statue by looking at the pose/posture, and the accompanying hand gestures.
It is believed by the Tibetans that the Buddha was responsible for delivering the knowledge of medicine to the people of the world, and in fact the right hand facing outward signifies "granting a boon" (giving a blessing) to mankind. This hand gesture, common amongst both Buddhist and Hindu statues, is also recognized for general knowledge, not only knowledge of medicine.
Do you know anyone named Dana? The Buddhist tradition of Dana [daana] is the first theme in Buddha's gradual training. Buddhist teachings/knowledge is freely given, because it is considered priceless. So the giving or offering of alms (Dana) is not payment for goods or services rendered; it is a gift from the heart as appreciation for the gift of a priceless treasure.
This piece and Meditation Buddha with Offerings would make a lovely pair of prints.
