Description
Built over sixty years after the California Gold Rush and ten years after the San Francisco earthquake and fire, Filoli's eclectic style provides an inspiring vision of a new Eden, with bountiful land, plentiful resources and an emphasis on self-sufficiency.
The mansion was built for Mr. and Mrs. William Bowers Bourn, wealthy San Franciscans, owners of the Empire Mine, a hard-rock gold mine, and the Spring Valley Water Company.
Mr. Bourne chose to name his home 'Filoli' by combining the first two letters from the key words of his credo: “Fight for a just cause; Love your fellow man; Live a good life.”
Filoli is a tranquil, scenic estate with exquisite gardens (including 'flat' espaliered fruit trees - a technique I'd never seen - and huge centuries-old Chinese Oaks - along with flora of every size and color).
This image is taken through limbs of a Blue Atlas Cedar, looking out toward the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Wonderful framing Carol. Love the detail of the tree - and who could turn down such a beautiful view?
