Description
Have you ever seen horns like this? You can clearly see the rubs on them, left from the Watusi version of arm-wrestling.
Safari West, in the Sonoma Valley outside Santa Rosa (which is about an hour north of San Francisco) is a less costly alternative to an African photo safari. Guests are escorted in refurbished troop carriers - just in case any of the less friendly animals take offense at being disturbed - with excellent, knowledgable guides. My friend and I stayed overnight in one of their very nicely appointed, but slightly chilly, safari tents. Underneath the abundant quilts, sleeping was fine. Venturing into the bathroom (February, NO heat/no insulation) in the morning was another thing altogether.
The following information is excerpts from Oklahoma State University Animal Science website.
Ankole-Watusi cattle can easily trace their ancestry back more than 6,000 years and have often been referred to as "cattle of kings." Traditionally, Ankole-Watusi were considered sacred. They supplied milk to the owners, but were only rarely used for meat production, since an owner's wealth was counted in live animals.
Long-horned, humpless domestic cattle were well established in the Nile Valley by 4000 B.C., appearing in pictographs in Egyptian pyramids. Over the next twenty centuries (2.000 years), the Egyptian Longhorn migrated with its owners from the Nile to Ethiopia, and then down to the southern reaches of Africa.

Thank you for selecting my suggestion, Pam! It's not a Longhorn - it's a Watusi! Thank you for the L/F, Hanne!
