Artist's Description

In 1947, American author Marguerite Henry visited Chincoteague Island, VA and became acquainted with a herd of wild ponies that roamed on that island and its neighboring Assateague Island. Misty of Chincoteague quickly became a must-have for every horse-crazy little girl (and I bet a few boys, too).

Chincoteague Island has become more commercial - due in some part to the fame of this book and the annual roundup of these ponies, which are swum across a narrow neck from Assateague to Chincoteague and auctioned to the public. But Assateague is now a wildlife refuge, where three herds (two in Virginia and one in Maryland) roam freely, although the public is fenced away from them. Ponies are only one species protected on this refuge - birds of all varieties live or pause there on their yearly migration; several species of deer and other critters abound. And if you prefer flora to fauna, there's a lot of that, too.

Seeing (or hearing about) their reactions as they relive an experience or emotion—whether remembered or vicarious—makes my spirit sing. I research and provide background information if such is appropriate for a...
