Thank you, Mona! It's an amazing bridge, although I'm not in favor of the 'glass' walkway. VERY slippery when wet - almost got wiped out by a cyclist who DID wipe out. He and his bike almost got me!

Artist's Description

I am standing at the bottom of the 'sundial' tower, with my back to the structure. The photograph is black and white (well, OK, shades of gray) because is was a gray, rainy day.

This amazing structure is a cantilever spar cable-stayed bridge for bicycles and pedestrians which forms a large sundial and spans the Sacramento River in Redding, California. Designed by Santiago Calatrava, it was completed in 2004 at a cost of $23,500,000.

The support tower of the bridge forms a single 217-foot mast that points due north at a cantilevered angle, allowing it to serve as the gnomon of a sundial. Rather than a symmetrical arrangement of cable forces on each side of its support tower, this bridge uses a cantilever tower, set at a 42-degree angle with cable stays on only one side.

The 700 foot bridge crosses the river without touching the water, protecting the salmon spawning grounds beneath the bridge. The cable for the bridge totals 4,342 feet and was made in Eng...

About Carol Lynn Coronios

Carol Lynn Coronios

A photograph is visual emotion, running the gamut from stark images of horror—to ‘snapshots in time’ commemorating special moments—to pieces that draw you into their world as if they were magnetized. These are the photographs that evoke a gasp, a “WOW!” or an “awwwww.” I consider myself a visual historian. Whether taking photographs of you and your horse, an old barn, or a misty sunrise, I am preserving history. Not just for you, or that barn, or that sunrise - but for the memories each regenerates in others. Seeing (or hearing about) their reactions as they relive an experience or emotion—whether remembered or vicarious—makes my spirit sing. I research and provide background information if such is appropriate for a...
