Description
Jordan, a young Paso Fino stallion, posed warily against the green summer background. Wasn't at all sure he liked whatever that thing was pointing at him (a camera, of course!).
Paso Fino is a Hispanic breed with a very distinctive gait. They walk in a normal 4-beat gait, and canter in a normal 3-beat gait. But their unique lateral 4-beat gaits of corto, largo, and fino (differences in collection of the gait) set this breed apart. A 4-beat gait means that each foot/hoof hits the ground separately and there is always at least one foot on the ground at a time. Lateral means that the legs of one side hit the ground, then the legs of the other side. If you're familiar with other breeds, a Standardbred pace is a lateral gait where both left legs move forward and hit the ground, then both right legs; in contrast, a trot is a diagonal gait, where the right fore and left hind hit together, then the left fore and right hind. The 4-beat lateral gait of the Paso Fino provides an incredibly comfortable, secure feeling ride, because the rider isn't swayed left and right as happens when riding a pacer, nor is s/he bumping around as happens at a trot.
Paso Finos are treasured for their 'con brio' (with vigor) - think of it as 'machismo' - but their smoothness of gait and disposition make many perfect mounts for youngsters, first-time riders, or re-riders with back problems.

I'm so embarrassed - I haven't spent much time on FAA recently and am mortified that I missed all your comments. Thank you!

Thank you, Navin. He thought he'd rather be doing nearly ANYTHING rather than having his picture taken.
