Description
One of the columns of the Million Dollar Staircase in the New York State Capitol. Identified faces are J.V.L. Pruyn and General H.W. Slocum.
Pruyn was on the commission to design and build the State Capitol. He also served in the NYS Senate in the early 1860s, then was elected to complete Erastus Corning's term in the US House of Representatives from 1863 - 1865. He was elected to serve in his own right from 1867 - 1869. Pruyn was appointed as a Regent to the State University of New York in 1844, and served as Commissioner from 1868 until his death in 1877.
Slocum graduated USMA West Point in 1852 and served as one of the youngest generals during the Civil War, where he did not distinguish himself during the Battle of Gettysburg. Antebellum, he served in the US House of Representative from 1869 - 1873. In 1876, he became President of the Department of Public Works in Brooklyn, where he was instrumental in the building of the Brooklyn Bridge. He also advocated (unsuccessfully, even back then) for no tolls on the bridges.
