Artist's Description
A peaceful October morning and a recommendation for a superb breakfast led me a few miles back down the Blue Ridge Parkway to Mabry Mill.
Wanting to catch the early morning light, I exercised a bit before breakfast. The reflections of this quiet pond enhance the serenity in this photograph.
The Mabry family received a land grant nearby in 1782. Ed Mabry, who built this mill, was born on his great-great-grandfather's land grant farm in 1867. He and his wife bought the land here in Meadows of Dan in 1903 to provide blacksmithing and wheelwright services for the local farmers. Those services almost immediately were expanded to include a sawmill, and in 1905, a grist mill was completed.
With no children to carry on, the National Park Service acquired the mill and its property after Ed's death in 1938. The gristmill and sawmill have been restored by park naturalists in order that visitors might see live exhibits, a real mill and a working miller to demonst...
