Great shot for a documentary or magazine article on racetracks...

I want to go back and see if I can get an even better angle. Wonderful on at least two counts - that the land is being used and that it is being used for alternative energy. The third location I wanted to shoot that day was wind turbines on a mountain ridge. Need to find a better vantage point for those.

Artist's Description

A field of solar panels gives new life to Green Mountain Racetrack in Pownal, VT.

Green Mountain started life in 1963 with ambitions of being able to extend the aura of the Saratoga meet in a pastoral country setting and died as a dog track in 1992 . In the middle there was also harness racing, and at one time all three meets were conducted in the same year.

The property has been dormant and for sale since that time. It was even listed on e-Bay! In 2013, Gestamp Renewables purchased the land.

Today the Green Mountain grandstand and track remain frozen in time, but large section of the property has been converted to a solar farm.

Seeing (or hearing about) their reactions as they relive an experience or emotion—whether remembered or vicarious—makes my spirit sing. I research and provide background information if such is appropriate for a...
