Description
Budbreak is like Christmas morning - all those tiny little packages start to unwrap - teasing you with visions of what they will yield.
Carneros lies south of and between the Napa and Sonoma valleys, and is home to some of the best Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and sparkling wines.
In the middle of this AVA lies a family vineyard whose story (especially these days) makes my heart sing. In 1967 (the year I should have graduated from college), after several years of participating in a work program in "el norte", Pablo and Juanita Cejas and their six children left their family in Mexico to make a new life in California's budding wine country. Continuing to work in the vineyards, the parents urged their children to attend college. In 1983, Pedro, Armando, and their parents pooled resources and invested in 15 precious acres in Carneros.
The first harvest in 1988 was just the beginning. The Cejas family (adult grandchildren are in the act now) owns over 100 acres and produces a wonderful variety of wines.
This photograph, taken at Cejas Vineyards with granddaughter Dalia in 2016, is in honor of all Mexican immigrants who have worked hard and found their dreams in the United States. Thank you for your work ethic and family values. Special hugs to Dalia and her family.
